What Time is it in Spain?

Spain has two timezones. Mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, and the cities of Ceuta and Melilla use Central European Time (CET) in winter (UTC+1) and Central European Summer Time (CEST) in summer (UTC+2). The Canary Islands use Western European Time (WET) in winter (UTC+0) and Western European Summer Time (WEST) in summer (UTC+1).

Major mainland cities including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, and Bilbao follow CET/CEST. The Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote) are 1 hour behind the mainland.

Fun Fact

Mainland Spain is geographically aligned with the UK and Portugal (WET timezone) but uses CET because Franco changed it in 1940 to align with Nazi Germany. This means Spain has later sunsets than expected—in summer, the sun doesn't set in Madrid until after 9:30 PM. The Canary Islands, 1,000 km off the coast of Africa, maintain WET as their natural timezone.
