Mauritania operates on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+0). The country does not observe daylight saving time, so the offset remains constant throughout the year.
All of Mauritania follows the same timezone. Major cities including Nouakchott, Nouadhibou, and KaƩdi all observe GMT. Nouakchott, the capital and largest city, is one of the largest cities in the Sahara Desert region.
Mauritania is home to the Richat Structure, also known as the "Eye of the Sahara," a massive geological formation visible from space that resembles a giant bullseye. The country also has one of the world's longest trains, stretching up to 3 kilometers, used to transport iron ore across the desert.
