Ethiopia operates on East Africa Time (EAT), which is 3 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+3). The country does not observe daylight saving time, so the offset remains constant throughout the year.
All of Ethiopia follows the same timezone. Major cities including Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Gondar, and Bahir Dar all observe EAT. Addis Ababa, the capital and largest city, serves as the headquarters of the African Union.
Ethiopia uses its own unique calendar, the Ethiopian Calendar, which is about 7-8 years behind the Gregorian calendar. The country also has its own way of telling time, with the day starting at sunrise (6:00 AM is "12 o'clock"). Ethiopia is one of only two African countries never to be colonized and is the birthplace of coffee.
